If you haven’t yet been to Pittsburgh, you’ve been missing out. For some reason, when many people think of Pittsburgh they imagine skies full of black smoke and heavy industry. While this was true 100 years ago, the city is now attractive, vibrant, and modern, and frequently voted as one of the most liveable in America.
Here are some reasons why you should visit Pittsburgh:
All of the bridges
Did you know that this city has more bridges than any other in the world? In fact, there are more than 700 in the greater Pittsburgh area, some of them large enough that they span three rivers. When you examine the craftsmanship of many of these bridges, you’ll see why Pittsburgh was nicknamed “Steel City.”
You may have seen Adventureland and noticed Kennywood Park, and this park opened way back in the early 1990s. It’s now the roller coaster capital of the world, and you’ll find some of the oldest wooden rollercoasters in operation
Be sure to try the Jack Rabbit, and check out the square ice cream cone and Potato Patch Fries when you visit.
There are many different cool neighbourhoods in Pittsburgh, however Lawrenceville is a standout. You’ll find it not far from downtown, and it’s now a hub for young creatives. Check out the 16:62 Design Zone, where you’ll find more than 100 businesses related to home-decor which cater to a huge variety of budgets and tastes.
You may be surprised to learn that Pittsburgh has a massive cultural scene. From world-class art museums to ballet, it also has an excellent theatre scene and a marvellous symphony. In fact, it has just about anything you’d want any city to have if you love the arts, and the low prices ($10 for tickets to the opera) keep it accessible for everyone.
Pittsburgh has recently become a foodie’s paradise, and it’s all about impressing the ingredient-conscious. Check out Legume Bistro, a farm-to-table restaurant, and be sure to try the cocktails and contemporary American food at the loungy Spoon.
