Most people heading to Africa for a safari think that they know what to expect. Dusty game drives daily in a large 4×4 in search of animals, with a side of relaxation when they finally arrive in the lodge at night. It’s a common enough holiday, if once in a lifetime for many. Combining a luxury train journey with that holiday isn’t always a leap that people make, but the time has come for the return of the luxury train holiday.

Travelling by train used to be a luxury, if you were wealthy at least. It offered you the exciting prospect of zipping along to a brand new destination. When trains were new, they truly offered travelling in comfort, with large luxurious carriages for the wealthy. They were elegant, truly upper class means of travel. This distinction exists no longer, which is surely a good thing for all, but it does mean that travelling by train is now so commonplace and so dull that in some cases we’d really just rather stay at home. After all, you’re as likely to end up standing crammed next to the loo as you are in a seat.

Traveling by luxury train in South Africa is an entirely different and completely refreshing experience. You’ll feel as though you’re in a luxury hotel on wheels, zipping along to your next destination. The food, of course, will be excellent as well. You may even have to dress for dinner, a sure sign that you’re remembering the past.

There are two different choices for travelling by luxury train. Both have game drives and short stops along the way to better acquaint you with the African countryside. The first of the two train options is the Rovos Rail, which operates just two trains. Both of them are remodelled and refurbished classic trains and may even be pulled by a steam locomotive if you’re lucky. The sleeper cars offer the most spacious train accommodation in the world, with deluxe double beds, a safe, air conditioning, a desk for writing, and even a mini bar fridge. Room service is 24/7; you’d struggle to believe that you weren’t in a luxury hotel unless you look out the window to see the countryside rolling by.

The Blue Train is the other luxury tour operator which runs trains through South Africa. Billed as a moving five star hotel, kings and presidents have used it to get around in the country, so you know it will be an amazing experience. Luxury suites even include bathtubs, a digital entertainment centre, and a selection of films and DVDs for your perusal. Between private suites are the lounge and club cars, where you’re able to sit, chat, and enjoy a drink or play a board game to while away your time. The dining car is like a fine restaurant and requires evening wear for dinner, with each meal prepared from the freshest ingredients gathered over a day’s travelling through the countryside. There will be no packaged food for you aboard this luxurious train, and if you’re looking for privacy or not ready for formality you can enjoy your meals in your suite.

If you’ve ever wanted to travel through South Africa in style, with the gorgeous landscape rolling by, then clearly a trip on one of the luxury trains is the perfect holiday for you.

Do we live to work or do we work to live. In this crazy world why is it that we simply exist from day to day, seemingly in continuous pursuit of problem solving objectives, be they those of your employer, your family, a child’s demands, we seem to be on this hamster wheel that never stops turning. There is an old cliche that tells us to stop and smell the roses, perhaps this is the better way to go. A “crooner” many years ago had an album, yes, a ling playing record, remember those, this was tiled “Stop the World, I want to get off” – if we apply this to the purpose of this article, let’s stop the madness and squeeze in some holiday and travel time.

In South Africa we are blessed, yes we might have experienced a little political turmoil but hey, so has Sri Lanka, the English parliamentarians haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory either, we are blessed with many destinations, many accommodation options and a climate that is often described as moderate in that day time temperatures in winter, yes winter, are on average more than 22 deg. C and rainfall, except perhaps in the Western Cape, is quite limited. Mist areas of Southern Africa experience light summer rains, often limited to afternoon shows and thundershowers particularly in the higher lying areas.

Our main tourism destinations are the game reserves and the Western Cape, centred around Cape Town, one of the internationally acclaimed and mist sought after travel destinations in the world. Unfortunately for our family, this is a nine hour drive and an expensive flight from East London, but certainly a destination we often visit, there is a great web site www.staysa.co.za which includes a travel guide and general information on Cape Town and many other areas.

Think about this for a moment, we work approximately 260 days of each year, we work in order to be awarded 15 days leave, if we are normal, we dedicate some 5 or so of those to family functions and that leaves us about two calendar weeks, weekends included, to have a holiday. Subject to all other conditions being acceptable such as budget, children’s school and sport commitments, both adults being able to be on leave simultaneously, the car being on good order, the kennel available for the dogs, whew, it’s actually amazing that we ever manage to leave home at all!

What we try and do as a family is to escape on weekends, at least once per month, this being our objective anyway, we target short trips usually less than two hours from home. We are blessed in owning holiday accommodation in Port Alfred, approximately one and a half hours drive from home. We go there if we are short of a better plan or if it’s been a last minute travel decision. Other recent destinations that are worth recommending in the Eastern Cape are Storms River Mouth, the Baviaanskloof, Addo Elephant Park, Seagulls Hotel on the Wild Coast, all being great short stop travel destinations in South Africa.

The moral of this story, make it your business to hop of the hamster wheel now and again, work to live, don’t love to work, quality family time is more important than we think it is sometimes.

Africa has the size, diversity and beauty to be the perfect gap year destination. With a year in which to explore its worth travelling that bit further find somewhere that will hold your attention and from the most colourful cities on the planet to the amazingly diverse array of wildlife, Africa won’t let you down. The only regret you’ll have is that there aren’t more days in a year or more film in your camera!

If you’ve a year on your hands to fill with incredible experiences and adventure; why not use it wisely and explore the world’s least discovered continent. Increasing modernisation has made Africa more accessible without taming its wild spirit. Plan your trip well and you can visit some of the best countries in the world from Uganda to Ghana, at a fraction of the cost of the other more famous tourist havens. Take a look at the ultimate gapyear tool; the Gapometer which rates Africa as a gap year destination.

***** Gaptastic

**** Great for gappers

*** Worth a look

** Too much else to see

*              Never mind the Gap

Volunteering

Your gap year experience wouldn’t be complete without spending some time volunteer volunteering in Africa. The problems of this continent are so well known they’ve passed into cliche. The legacies of past humanitarian crises as well as the attempt to prevent new ones means you can make a real difference here. In 2006, 34 of the 50 nations on the UN list of least developed countries were in Africa. There are lots of opportunities to get involved in volunteering projects in areas such as community work, wildlife protection and teaching or even link up more than one.

The WWF has listed 4 locations in Africa amongst their list of 19 priority places, so it’s not just the people here who face critical times ahead. Africa’s wildlife may grab the headlines but if you read the small print you’ll see that it’s the people that have the biggest effect on travellers here.

**** Projects here are challenging but rewarding

Travelling in Africa

If you’re spending a year somewhere then you’ll want to travel around and Africa offers plenty to enjoy, from jungles, game parks and beaches to a vast cultural heritage. Getting around Africa varies dramatically depending on the country you’re in; the richer the country the better you can expect the infrastructure to be. Public transport and crossing borders can be a source of frustration here as good, cheap transport is not as common as in Asia and officials sometimes expect bribes. Air passes that allow you to make multiple internal flights can be a time, stress and money-saving option. The situation is always improving though and for the determined, travel here is extremely rewarding.

*** By no means easy, but the best travelling never is

Cost

When you’re travelling for a long while, it’s important to keep track of your budget, even in a famously cheap continent like Africa. If you become too free and easy you’ll get a shock when you turn up in places like South Africa and find European prices to contend with. Aside from the few glitzy exceptions a modest budget will suffice and allow you to see plenty without running up a huge bill.

Africa has luxuries on offer for those who want them; it has its share of glamorous restaurants and hotels, but the best travelling is done on a shoestring. The best plan is to head for the markets and the budget hostels. Around the shops you can take advantage of a friendly exchange rate that will allow you to get a nifty souvenir or two. For those who plan to travel after a volunteer project, try to make it back to your original arrival destination; one return ticket is usually cheaper than two singles.

***** On the whole the cheapest continent in which to travel

The wow factor

Most of Africa’s wow factor is due to its amazing wild factor. There are very few beaten tracks to get off here and the whole trip will be an adventure. Africa is not the easiest place in which to travel but it may well be the most rewarding. Luckily practice makes perfect and no doubt you’ll be coming back again and again to polish your newly found travel skills.
