The summer is an ideal time to go on a cruise in California. However, if you’ve never been on a cruise, you may not know how to pack, how to get there and a number of other things.

Luckily, there are numerous people who have already been through this preparation and they are willing to share their experiences.

Getting There

The first thing you need to do is get to the harbor where your cruise ship departs. You have several different options when it comes to this. You have the option of driving your own car there. That does mean that you need to leave your car there unsupervised for the duration of your trip.

Public transport is another option in some places. However, it isn’t as reliable and clean as some other options. You don’t want to be late for your ideal vacation just because a bus broke down, or there is a track maintenance somewhere.

Finally, you can go in style and get there using a transport service. Door-to-ship transport may seem a bit extravagant and unnecessary at first; but when you think about all the hassle with the luggage and driving, it becomes more appealing by the second. Clothes

Once you’ve got your transport sorted, you can start packing. The first thing you should know is that the weather on the open seas is much different than the weather on the land. That’s why you will need a variety of clothes for the different weather conditions.

When it’s sunny, you will want to wear light clothing. Materials like linen and cotton are much better for summer than synthetic ones. However, don’t forget that when the boat is moving, you will experience strong winds. So, despite all the sun, it will get chilly. That’s why you’d better have something to protect you from this as well.

A summer cruise would be incomplete without swimming. It doesn’t matter if you prefer the onboard pool or the sea when the boat stops, you will need swimming attire. Even though we want the weather to be nice all of the time, it often rains at sea. You should be ready for such an eventuality. Of course, you can just stay inside while it’s raining if you prefer.

If you plan to visit various formal events organized by the cruise company, you will need formal clothes as well. Even some restaurants on board are formal wear only. For men that means a tuxedo and a bowtie, while women are expected to have a cocktail dress ready.

Accessories

Apart from clothes, you will need some accessories to help you through the day. Most importantly, there are hats. At sea, when the ship is moving, you may be experiencing a breeze and think that the sun is not as strong. However, just because you are not feeling it, doesn’t mean that it isn’t affecting your body. If you are not careful, you may end up with a heat stroke.

The sun is the reason to wear sunglasses as well. The reflection of the sun off of water can really cause strain in your eyes. The same reason should be enough for you to wear sunscreen at all times. Keep a small bottle of it with you at all times.

As for your electronic devices, they may be useful for finding your way around the towns you visit as well as for general communication. Just make sure you don’t get them wet or stolen somewhere along the way.
